"TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT."

Mr. Editor:-In the columns of the Patriot and Democrat of last week, you will find a paragraph which runs as follows:

"It is evident that the Whigs are rallying to the approaching contest with unusual vigor. There is a simultaneous cheering from their venal presses in every direction. What has so suddenly nerved their courage and infused extraordinary vigor into their limbs? Democrats of Connecticut, you little suspect the cause. It is distant in its location, secret in its operation, tremendous in its power. It is more dangerous to the rights of freemen, more fatal to purity and patriotism, more awful should it triumph, &c. It is taking its secret measures to grasp up Connecticut, and proclaim its first triumphs in the destruction of her democracy. You will feel it in the yoke upon your own neck."

"Angels and ministers of grace defend us!" What is the cause of this alleged encouragement, hilarity, and general joy in the one case, and of all this deep gloom, terror, and awful consternation in the other! What indescribable, what fatal calamity, moral, political, or physical, is about to befall the "exclusive immaculates" of '35! What terrible and deadly infection, "secret in its operations," and so disheartening and appalling to the simon pures, is now impending over this land of pumpkins! What inhuman, what partial and unfeeling despot, "with tremendous power," durst menace the "waddlers" and "conspirators" with abject subjugation, the extinction of their liberties in general, but with the destruction of their democracy in particular! What frightful colossus, what cannibal of a Cyclops is about to invade the fair borders of our peaceful State, and, without remorse, and with appetite most keen, threatens to devour our "loco focos and patent demos," our "Bank monopolists and twaddlers;" leaving unscathed and undisturbed, both in person and possession, as objects of special grace, the genuine Republicans of the land! "Where and what art thou, execrable shape," that, in "secret measures," doth "grasp up old Connecticut," and swallow down her quasi democrats and patentees! "Art thou a spirit of health, or goblin damn'd! Bring'st thou airs from heaven, or blasts from hell?"

Let him of the Patriot answer:-"It is the Bank"! the Bank! the Bank is alive!! the old one!! Oh! Liberty, Liberty! Patriotism, Patriotism! thy grave is dug, and thou, in all thy beauty, must be entombed! for the "Bank! the Bank is alive! the old one"!!

But, sincerely, if the above extract from the Patriot and Democrat can be gravely considered by its subscribers without exciting the risibility of their nature, then indeed are they odd specimens of humanity-perfect boa constrictors beyond a doubt! The Key-Stone State, in the exercise of its constitutional and legislative functions, deemed the incorporation of a single Bank, a matter of public expediency; and christened it the "U. S. Bank."

"The head and front of her offending hath this extent, no more."

Hence the Patriot's affectation of alarm, terror, &c.! But, Mr. Editor, let the Patriot understand, that a knowledge of the real cause of this zeal, activity and full determination of the republicans of this State to achieve a triumph at the approaching election, is not found in the incorporation of any banking institution; but, as patriots and as democrats, in fact, is entirely attributable to a deep conviction of a sense of duty. Their earnest desire is neither "loaves or fishes," but the consummation of the public good-to wrest the government of the ship of State from the hands of vile
and scheming demagogues who are letting her drive reckless of the safety and interest of the crew, Let the Patriot understand, that the management of the Assembly of '35 was indelibly disgraceful to any Legislative body-was revolting to the judgment and wishes of the people-repugnant to the rights and interest of the State-hypocritical in the extreme. Let him understand that the spirit of the constitution and the laws was then, in several instances, wantonly disregarded and violated-that order, purity, and patriotism were then compelled to retire before the then dominant corruption, selfishness, and the worst passions of the human heart-that talents, integrity, and acknowledged worth were immolated to gratify the malevolence, hatred, and insatiable avarice of mean and despicable demagogues and brawling and miserable office-seekers-that sycophancy and favoritism, regardless of principle and merit, were then the order of the day; and that, with respect to the faction then in power, truth, equity, justice, and equal rights were indefinitely postponed!!
