Full Text

The Potter committee on Saturday last opened their investigation of the alleged frauds pertaining to the Presidential election in Louisiana and Florida, by the examination of Jas. E. Anderson, Supervisor of Registration in the parish of East Feliciana, La. Anderson has been announced as the trump-card of the Tilden crowd, upon whose testimony they rely mainly for evidence that will secure the impeachment of the President and Secretary Sherman. He has testified, and the only clear result of his story is to establish the fact, from his own lips, that he is a forger, a perjurer and a scoundrel generally. It is evident, from his own story, that he has entered into a corrupt conspiracy with the Democrats. It needs no other proof than his own admissions to show that Anderson so managed matters in his parish that not a single Republican vote was cast therein though the honest Republican majority was over 1,000. Then, when he had returned to New Orleans, and found himself face to face with the stupendous rascality perpetrated under his supervision, he weakened on the Democrats and put in a protest against it, certifying to the Returning Board that the election was not fairly conducted. He then began to importune the Administration and Republicans in high places for a lucrative office as pay for his treachery. He has latterly accompanied these importunities with threats of what he would do if his demands were not satisfied. The administration, having ascertained his true character and still ignoring his demands, he has unloaded his tale of rascality and fraud to the Potter committee, undoubtedly under a promise of reward from the coffers of Sam Tilden. He produces an alleged copy of a letter from Secretary Sherman, which the latter on his oath pronounces a forgery. He makes other statements which parties knowing to the facts pronounce false. When compared with the testimony sworn to by him before the Investigating Committee at New Orleans, which is inconsistent with that given before the Potter committee, he is compelled, in order to give credence to the latter, to declare, virtually, that he perjured himself on the former occasion. His whole bearing is that of an unscrupulous adventurer, who went in to make a pile out of the Louisiana business, and failing to get his pay for what was, by his own admission, dishonest knavery, from one party, sells his bundle of perjury and forgery to the opposite party. The Democratic investigating committee that visited New Orleans last year, three members of which are now on the Potter committee, declared Anderson a man who "could not be believed under oath," "a trickster in whom no confidence can be placed." We refer our readers to a searching analysis of his evidence in another column, taken from the Chicago Tribune.
