The last dispatches received from the marquis de Gallo, were dated from Udina, the 20th of August. They bring advice that the marquis had sent a Courier to General Buonaparte, to inform him of his arrival at Udina; and the general must by this time have met him there. Our court, as may be expected, continues its preparations for war, with the utmost activity; we doubt not, however, that a definitive peace will very shortly be signed at Udina. It is hoped, that such modifications will be adopted, with respect to Mantua, as shall be satisfactory to both parties. Should Austria possess the country on the Banks of the river Adige, the money offered by the Cisalpine republic will enable the Emperor to build strong fortresses along that river; and should Mantua be ceded to France, or the Cisalpine republic, it will, no doubt, be on such conditions as shall be perfectly consistent with the interests of Austria and its new Frontiers. The dispute, however, will now be very shortly determined; and within a few months time, notice will be given to the army of the Hungarian levy, whether farther employment will be found for it, or whether it may return home.
As the German troops in Italy have suffered severely by the heat of the country, and the diseases occasioned by it, they are to be recalled, and Croats who are more used to the Climate, sent in their stead.
