Opposes Permanent UMT
NEW YORK - Firm opposition to permanent universal military training was voted yesterday by the General Board of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.
In the action taken at its bi-monthly meeting, the Board acknowledged the need for "adequate defense measures" but condemned a permanent U.M.T. program as "a long step in the direction of a garrison state."
A major part of the day-long meeting at the Hotel Commodore was devoted to consideration of the proposal for U.M.T. now before Congress and with making financial plans for the second year of the National Council. Presiding was the Council's president, the Rt. Rev. Henry Knox Sherrill, who is also presiding bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church.
Board members unanimously voted a new, larger budget for the Council's program in 1952, after hearing the report that the organization had ended its first year of operation with a two-thousand-dollar surplus. They voted a basic "house keeping" budget of $3,169,000 with provision of $3,713,000 to cover both self supporting operations and also some projects to be undertaken as funds become available, and as they are approved by the Board.
The Board's first discussion of universal military training brought out 129 board members, consultants and guests, one of the largest groups to attend since the organization got under way January 1, 1951.
