Tom Paine's superior sagacity lately discovered that the Bible is full of lies—his disciple Quixotte, by a like sagacity, more recently discovered that President Adams's Book is full of the principles of Monarchy and Aristocracy.—What a pity 'tis our democrats do not better agree with their sweethearts in France!!! When republican ideas were at their height in that regenerated country, their best men read this same Book and imbibed its principles with avidity—translated it into French—sketched its whole principles in an introductory piece, that those who should not read the whole, might yet become acquainted with the outlines of so excellent a work—and, finally, pronounced it the best treatise they had found on the subject of genuine republicanism. But as our demagogues follow the clue of their transatlantic brethren with the utmost servility in every other respect, who knows but they may soon in this.
