PROHIBITION CONVENTION TOMORROW
PLATFORM ADOPTED LIKELY TO BE BRIEF
Effort to Limit it to Single Issue; Plenty of Available Timber For Presidential Nomination.
[By Morning Journal Special Leased Wire.]
Columbus, Ohio, July 13.—With but few of the delegates to the national prohibition convention which will be held here Wednesday and Thursday on the ground, the contests for the nomination for president presents no definite aspect tonight. Many of the leaders are here, but the state delegations will not begin to arrive until tomorrow. A vigorous movement in behalf of Professor Charles S. Scanlon, of Pittsburgh, for the presidential nomination, is the latest development.
Professor Scanlon is in the field as the representative of the temperance society of the Presbyterian church. He led the fight against endorsement of the Anti-Saloon league at the meeting of the Presbyterian general assembly in this city a year ago. Other candidates for first place whose names are receiving consideration are F. F. Wheeler, of Los Angeles; D. R. Sheen, of Peoria, Ill.; Alfred Manners, of New York, and Joseph P. Tracey, of Detroit. Others in the race are G. R. Stuart, of Tennessee; Rev. J. D. Crandall, of Dallas, Texas, and P. W. Palmore, of St. Louis.
No word has as yet been received from Judge Samuel A. Artman, of Indiana, who has been mentioned for the presidential nomination, as to whether he will consent to the use of his name. Professor Scanlon, Judge Artman and others mentioned for president, are now at Winona, Ind., where they are lecturing. Up to the present time but one candidate for vice president has appeared. Professor A. S. Watkins, of Ohio, is a candidate for this place. It is expected that he will be nominated for governor by the state convention tomorrow, and if so it will be with the understanding that he will withdraw from the state ticket in the event that he secures second place on the national ticket. The reason there are no other entries for the vice presidential nomination is that it has been customary to select this candidate from the defeated candidates for president.
There is a strong sentiment among some of the leaders who are already on the ground in favor of confining the national platform to the issue of prohibition.
It is the general opinion that the platform will be brief, whatever scope may be given to its declarations.
There will be meetings tomorrow of the national and central and national executive committees. The former will name temporary officers to be recommended to the convention, which will open at Memorial hall Wednesday at 10 a. m. The district meetings for the selection of members of the national control and other committees will be held tomorrow afternoon.
While some of the leaders are antagonistic to the Anti-Saloon league, it is significant that invitations have been issued by the national committee to Rev. A. P. Baker, superintendent of the American Anti-Saloon league, and Wayne B. Wheeler, superintendent of the Ohio league, to attend the convention.
The Ohio state prohibition convention opened here today, and tomorrow it will adopt a platform and name a full state ticket.
