COMMUNICATIONS.

Mr. Beck—The nomination of the Hon. LANGLEY BOARDMAN, in your paper a few weeks since, for Counsellor for the Rockingham and Merrimac district, is well received by the people. Of this I am fully convinced by considerable inquiry which I have made, and from information received from different parts of the district. He is not only well qualified for the office, but possesses those traits of character, which justly render him very popular, wherever he is known. He is well calculated to unite the republican citizens. This is an important consideration; as a division, at this time, might jeopardize our republican interests.

Since the nomination of Mr. Boardman, a convention has been called for the purpose of agreeing upon suitable candidates for Counsellor and county officers. Had it been known, that a Convention would be called this year for that purpose, Mr. Boardman's name would not probably have been announced, previous to the meeting of the Convention. It will be recollected, that there has not been a County Convention for that purpose for several years past. It will not therefore be presumed, that there was any disposition to dictate to the people, who should be their Counsellor. but merely to recommend a suitable candidate; and Mr. Boardman is now respectfully proposed to the Convention to be held this day, as a gentleman worthy of the full confidence of the friends of republican principles—as possessing such qualifications as would render him a useful member of the Council—and whose firmness, independence, integrity, and attachment to republicanism, no one will call in question. He is a man of a strong, liberal, and expanded mind, and who is devoted to the interests of the people. Should the republicans see fit to elect Mr. Boardman to this office, they may depend upon it, that the federal party could not deceive him—that he could distinguish a federalist from a republican, and that he would not agree to the appointment of a decided federalist.

If a man has discharged the duties of an important office with faithfulness and ability, it surely furnishes presumptive evidence, that he would conduct with faithfulness and ability in another station. Mr. Boardman discharged the duties of a Senator in the State Legislature certainly with ability, to the honor of himself and his constituents, and his conduct met the public approbation.

Mr. Boardman was proposed as a candidate for Counsellor last year, towards the eve of the election, and probably owing to that circumstance he did not receive a majority of the votes, as the matter was not fully explained. Indeed many did not know that he was a candidate. It was therefore expected that he would this year again be proposed. But it is a fact, which now ought to be understood, that Mr. Boardman is not proposed for this office at his desire: but from a strong conviction on the part of many republicans, that it is highly important, that we should, at the ensuing election, choose a firm, decided, intelligent and consistent republican for our Counsellor. Our object ought to be to elect such a man, discarding all personal or sinister views. And had any gentleman better qualified for the office than Mr. Boardman, and who would more strongly unite our republican citizens in his support, been nominated previous to his nomination, it would have been the duty of all true genuine republicans to unite in his support. But under existing circumstances, it is humbly conceived, that the democratic republicans will perceive the importance of freely and cheerfully giving to Mr. Boardman their undivided suffrages.
