Extract of a Letter from London, Sept. 13.
"By this time I hope Tranquility and good Temper reigns thro' the whole Continent, and that the Satisfaction of being released from Distress, prevails more in the Minds of the Colonists, than ever the Gloom that very Distress at first occasioned; you should now surely be satisfied. You have now got into the Hands of a Ministry, who, in Fact, did you the essential Service of getting the Stamp-Act repealed. The Union between the Mother Country and her Colonies being thus happily cemented, should not be interrupted by small peevish Disputes upon Matters of little or no Moment. Wise and calm Men should seize the happy Opportunity of inculcating the greatest Cordiality and Kindness; should encourage People to meet the Wishes of a mild Government, and not to cavil upon little insignificant Points, after having obtained the very Essence of Liberty."
"Lord Shelburne, as Secretary of the Southern department, has the colonies under his care. He has hitherto acted upon large and general principles; and be persuaded, that his most zealous wishes are to be able to procure for this kingdom and the colonies, the most permanent and solid advantages."
"You know too well the nature of the people here to be much surprised at the flagrant abuse against Lord Chatham, but it is dying by degrees; and it is begun to be understood that he can be a great Minister to this country, let him sit in what House of Parliament, or occupy what high office he pleases."
