SANTA BARBARA, Calif. Aug. 18 (U.P.) Thirty hoboes who forcibly took possession of a Southern Pacific freight train to try everything except actual operation of the locomotive today faced arraignment in municipal court here on vagrancy charges.
The gang of "Road Knights" made trainmen of themselves when brakemen attempted to eject them at San Luis Obispo.
Frantic calls by a train dispatcher sent a squad of armed detectives to recapture the freight for the Southern Pacific. Sighting the officers just inside the Santa Barbara city limits, the hoboes abandoned their guard over trainmen and began leaving the cars.
Only two escaped however. These were said to have been the only ones in the gang who had weapons.
Superior Judge Marshall McComb set August 21 as date for argument on the motion.
