Carswell Praised for District Work

Presiding Elder H. C. Carswell of West Atlanta District of the A. M. E. Church, was praised Friday for his work in the area by a large assemblage at Cosmopolitan Church, the Rev. A. A. Rugnoute, pastor.

Speaking over Radio Station WERD following the main program in the church auditorium, Dean E. C. Mitchell, of Morris Brown College stated that Dr. Carswell is "typical of the true Morris Brown man or woman whose philosophy is always 'take what you have and make what you want.' Seven years ago," Mitchell continued, "the West Atlanta district was in such a rut that even one of its most prominent positions was filled by an urban appointment. The choice and discrimination by-passed it in search of an assigned district that gave promise of growth and a livelihood. But today, under the impact of the dynamic and progressive leadership of the present presiding elder, the West Atlanta boasts of one of the most forward-looking programs in the A. M. E. Church in Georgia and in the connection. Its church property valuation has been increased very appreciably. Its local church membership has grown to large proportions. Its ministerial personnel has become the equal of that of other districts in the conference. Its program of religious education is in line with present-day trends. Its reports have been stabilized, and it is justly proud of its record among the leaders of the conference and the state.

LEADERS ON PROGRAM

Many community leaders appeared on the program to honor the presiding elder. They included the Rev. William Holmes Borders, pastor of Wheat Street Baptist Church; the Rev. A. S. Dickerson, the Revs. S. Hardtman, of College Park, J. Harland Ben Gay, president of A. M. E. Ministers' Union among others; Dr. C. A. Talbert, dean, Gammon Theological Seminary; G. L. Hightower, chairman of finances and of the honoree.

Churches of the district participating included Cosmopolitan, Trinity, Palmetto, College Park and Fair Street; Turner Monumental and Shaw.

Applause was expressed to the president and sponsors of the affair for its presentation. The group also honored Franklin D. Roosevelt, the late president and humanitarian.
