It is impossible to pick up a Republican
paper or to bear a Republican Speech
in which every Democrat who is in favor
of the Union, the Constitution and Mc-
Clellan is not denounced and stigmatized
as a traitor. Let us argue this point a
little. Webster defines the word in this
way:
"TRAITOR-1. One who violates his
allegiance and betrays his country; one
guilty of
one who in breach of
trust, delivers
his country to its ene-
mies, or any fort or place entrusted to
his defense, or who surrenders an army
or body of troops to the enemy, unless
when vanquished; or one who takes
arms and levies war against his coun-
try; or one who aids an enemy in con-
quering his country.
2. One who betrays his trust."
And this word is bandied from lip to
lip-taught the children of Republicans
and from type and tongue hurled at the
earnest Democracy-the true patriots of
the country with all the venom of hate.
envy, ignorance, fanaticism, bigotry and
half halfiled effort to override Constitu-
tional laws and provisions.
Democrats are not traitors, and the ly-
ing tongue which utters, or the hellish
hand which teaches posterity such im-
pious slanders should wither in fear of an
insulted people, or fall powerless from
shame if such a feeling ever was found in
the breast of a Republican.
Democrats do not betray their country
into the hands of her enemies. Demo-
crats do not betray the high and holy trust
reposed in them.
The Democratic party never endorsed
any war upon the Constitution of our
country.
A traitor is "one who betrays his trust."
Abraham Lincoln is a traitor.
He has betrayed his trust.
He has broken his oath of office.
He has perjured himself before God
and the American people who elected him
to the office he holds.
He has betrayed his trust and made as
vigorous a war upon the great bulwark
of liberty, the Constitution, as ever did
Jeff. Davis.
He has set the Constitution at defiance.
He has ignored his oath of office, to
stand by and defend the Constitution.
He has set himself up as a law maker
as well as a law executor.
He has betrayed the trust reposed in
him by the people who elected him to ex-
ecute and not to dictate laws.
He has abolished the sacred right of
magna carta for which England warred
six hundred years and for which our pa-
triotic Washington fought and prayed.
He has made himself a President of a
party instead of a nation.-La Crosse
Democrat.
