The Cecil Whig

Elkton, Cecil County, Maryland

What is this article about?

The Richmond South, a Democratic organ, criticizes Baltimore Democrats (locofocos) for repeatedly complaining of intimidation by the weaker Know Nothing party during elections, particularly the recent mayoral race. It deems their narrative tedious, preferring to view it as exaggeration rather than cowardice, and urges courageous action over appeals for sympathy.

Full Text

The Baltimore locofocos, who, after every election, complain that they are driven away from the polls by a party weaker (as they say) than themselves, are beginning to disgust their friends in other parts of the country. The Richmond South a locofoco organ refers as follows to their whine about the late Mayor's election:

"It is now several years since the Democracy of Baltimore first startled the country by a narrative of the bloody excesses by which they were brought under the subjection of Know Nothingism. They have had repeated opportunities to recover their ascendancy. They have been impressively admonished of their adversary's designs and mode of warfare. They claim to be men of spirit and honor. They protest that they have a majority of citizens in their party. And yet the Democracy of Baltimore are still crying out against the lawless usurpation of a Know Nothing minority! Within the past week, their papers have assured us that they would have elected their candidate for Mayor, if the great army of their voters had not been kept from the polls by intimidation.

The story is becoming both tedious and disgusting. The public are reduced to the alternative of suspecting its truth, or of regarding the Baltimore Democracy as a set of miserable poltroons. We prefer the former. We would rather be persuaded that our allies in the Monumental city had exaggerated their numbers and the violence of their adversary, than believe them capable of the abject submission to tyranny which they impute to themselves. In the one case they can only be reproached with an unworthy electioneering artifice. In the other they advertise themselves the timid and helpless victims of oppression by a weaker party.

If the Democracy of Baltimore are the injured creatures they would have us believe, they will gain more applause by a courageous effort for emancipation, than by a perpetual and importunate appeal to the sympathies of the country. If they merely employ an expedient of electioneering, we can assure them the public are repelled by the repetition of their fictitious sufferings."
