LIFE.
Close by the murmuring streamlet's flow
The wild flowers bloom all summer long.
Unconscious of the tears and woe
That seem the lot of human throng
So calmly fair.
Oh for such sinless peace.
Lulled by the wood-brook's flow
Such beautiful release
From all the ills we know!
Oh, sweet beneath some spreading tree
When spring has filled the fields with bloom
Comes silent sleep to set us free
From toil and care, from sombre gloom,
So still, so sweet!
Oh for such soothing sleep.
Blessed with angelic dreams,
So silent, calm, and deep.
The soul in heaven seems!
When music with her witching swell
Enchants the heart with mystic power
When love and hope and youth as well
Thrill as if dawned their natal hour
Such power hath song
Oh for a life so fair
Throbbing with music sweet,
A symphony so rare,
A harmony complete!
But life is not a wild flower's bloom,
Nor yet the sinlessness of sleep.
The duties of the present loom
Resistlessly with import deep,
So real is life.
Yet through the storm and stress,
Something of wild-flower calm,
Something of sleep to bless,
Something of music's balm!
