THE EARTH COLLAPSES.

An Area Covering Five Acres Goes Down With a Crash.

WILKESBARRE, PA., Oct. 1—A big cave in took place at Plains this morning. The pillars in the Millcreek mine gave way and the earth, covering an area of five acres, fell down with a terrific crash. Many houses on the surface were wrecked. The people were asleep, and they were thrown out of their beds. Many were injured. Bottoms of all the wells dropped out. In some places there were holes big enough for a horse and a cart to drop through to the mine below, a distance of 300 feet.
