The following is handed about in Paris, as the petition of the women of the province of Dauphine to the King of France.

Sire,

Their overthrowing, overturning, and changing the form of every thing at your pleasure, after exiling the magistrates, and leaving to the nation but the phantom of its ancient constitution, and after having imposed silence on the brave defenders of our sex, you imagine, Sire, that you may laugh at women, who are supposed to be always satisfied and content, provided there remains in town their usual pompous amusements, and their coquetry: You are greatly mistaken, Sire. Our party become every day more formidable. History will inform you that in every age the spirit of the fair sex has always influenced the national spirit. Its energy displays itself suitably to the prevailing circumstances, and the present crisis has produced that effect. There is not one among us who does not feel the ardour of the patriots flame: We are ready to encounter with a becoming boldness, the greatest dangers and to expose our persons to the most daring trials. Not in the least dismayed at your boundless powers, and irresistible force, the mightiest efforts shall be attempted on our side: your soldiers, your bayonets, your bombs, and your cannons shall not make us retreat from our post: under the light accoutrement of a gauze helmet, we shall oppose an undaunted countenance, and our intrepid hearts shall never cease to demand of you what they most earnestly wish-our magistrates, our parliament, our rights, and our privileges; the re-establishment, in short, of those conditions on which the nation in ancient times condescended to trust your predecessors with their liberty: and of those laws, the support of which alone can insure happiness and glory to them.

These, Sire, are the claims humbly laid at the foot of the throne, by your most faithful subjects: they are not, we dare say, so insignificant as to be rejected or disdained; for, in the present contest, and in the attempt of having all your orders executed, it might happen that we should refuse to produce any children for the state; we shall do it de bonne grace under a wise prudent, and happy government: but to give existence to beings doomed to be the slaves of despotism, no attempt whatever can certainly succeed. This is the resolution, Sire, of your Majesty's most respectful and most affectionate women of the province of Dauphine.
