Two dozen hotel and motel representatives yesterday recommended that the county's $10,000 advertising budget be used this year as in the past, but with the advertising built around a central theme.
John Goggin of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce suggested the central theme idea.
Last Year's Division
It also was brought out at the meeting that last year the $10,000 was divided between the Key West chamber, Marathon chamber and Upper Keys chamber and billboards.
The Key West chamber got $3,000 and the other two chambers received $1,175 each. The three billboards cost $1,290.
The chambers use the money for folders and in answering the many mail queries they receive.
Harold Laubscher, Key West chamber manager, told the group he had received 6,000 letters in the last 90 days. He added that the Key West chamber spent more than $1,000 on postage last year to answer letters.
How It's Spent
Paul Sawyer, attorney for the Casa Marina Hotel, pointed out that the county advertising commission also spends money on newspaper and radio ads and also contributes to fishing tournaments and other functions that bring publicity to Monroe County.
Some of those present felt the $10,000 advertising budget was too low and should be upped.
Sawyer explained that state law set the figure and the county commissioners could not appropriate more money without the okay of the state legislature.
Mel Levitt acted as chairman at the meeting.
