There is a screw loose in the Yankee machine. All the indications tell of internal discontent in the Northern States. Peace meetings continue to be held in various places, and they are always composed of traitors and are called "masked batteries." Individuals, too, are being constantly arrested in the interior of the Northern States—native Northerners—and thrown into prison on the charge of disloyalty. In addition to these pregnant signs, volunteering for the war appears to be exhausted, and it is roundly asserted in the New York World that the draft will be necessary to keep up the army. The foreigners, too, who have been doing most of the Yankee fighting up to this time, appear to have been suddenly seized with pacific intents. To revive their warlike appetites, the Yankees are wasting a vast amount of soft-sawder upon such Irish or German characters as seem, from their necessities or fondness for notoriety, likely to be seduced. Mighty tempting offices have been made to Garibaldi, with the view of stimulating Italian and Catholic populations to enlist in support of the despotism. It was even said that the Italian liberator was already on his way to this country. But last accounts represent him as quietly at home, and without a thought of mixing himself up with the Yankee vulgarians. The great Hibernian, Meagher, comes in for a heavy dose on all occasions from the Lincoln flatterers. They make speeches to him, write him letters, and toast him, and have actually turned the poor creature's head, and almost made him forget his flight at Centreville on the 21st July. Then, he was done with war—the rebel was belligerent and had a right to recognition; now under the influence of soothing flatteries, he seems disposed to change his opinion. At any rate, the Yankees indulge the hope, not that they care for him, but expect through him to honey-fuggle other Irishmen. The meanness of these wretches in thus striving to inveigle foreigners to fight their battles, betrays not only their cowardice, but their weakness. If they felt strong enough to overcome the South, they would not be everywhere begging the vagabonds from Europe to help them out of their difficulties. With twenty-two millions to seven, two out of three might be cowards, and they would still have enough to cope with the South! Do, for the sake of the American character, show a little pluck. Let the Germans and Irish alone, and fight your own battles! If you win the day by their arms, you cannot have the credit of the victory. Better rely upon yourselves. You have a great number of long range guns, which will enable you to carry on the war without endangering your precious persons, and a vast variety of ingenious contrivances, such as the calcium light, for exposing the adversary and concealing yourselves. It would be a pity and a shame to forfeit so much glory, so easily to be achieved, by employing foreigners to do your fighting. The world is talking pretty freely about you now, as much fitter for big words than big deeds; by hiring Germans and Irish to represent your manhood you will go far to justify this disparaging talk.
