Charles Ellet, Jr., architect of the Niagara Falls suspension bridge, thus describes his first passage over it in his vehicle. "This morning I took the plank off my four horse carriage with the mud sill and then drove over and back again in a jiffy. Five hundred feet in the bridge was without ruling on either side. My horse, tho spirited, went along quietly, touched up occasionally with the whip, just to show him that he was in command of, while him courage. "On turning, I decided on the other way to have his team in horse closed carriage, weighing about three ton and a half. Took his place on the box and drove over and back. The horses went quietly. The bridge is 220 feet high, 770 ft long, and without railing, yet so stout is it you might saw it and never will it waver with a wheel.
