GEN. SCOTT.
In our last we gave the announcement of Gen. Scott's departure from Vera Cruz, in the schooner Taney for New York—and his arrival at said city daily expected from the latter port. We are gratified to learn that he has arrived in safety.
It is estimated that at Vera Cruz about two thousand volunteers have arrived here from the north, and are waiting for an opportunity to return to the States. There is no death detected here in our latest advices.
In other and important news from the seat of war, we learn that during the recent operations in Mexico I have detected in sundry manuscripts and in the property of these fugitives from in a walled commensurate with a par ap...
WILLIAM MEER.
The saint even by the Mayor has promptly responded to by the Board. The following resolutions were adopted:
Whereas information has been received that Major General Winfield Scott, of the U. S. Army has taken passage from Vera Cruz for this port.
And Whereas. The citizens of New York should gladly welcome the hero who from lonely sentinel to the city of the Montezumas has covered the flag of his country with imperishable honor—winning for himself a fame which will perish only when a grateful country shall cease to exist:
And whereas. It is proper that the gallant soldier should be received in a manner commensurate with his own merits and the estimation in which we, as American citizens, hold his faithful, admirable and valiant services in the late campaigns through which he has passed so gloriously:
Therefore Resolved, That a committee be appointed to make suitable arrangements for the reception of Gen. Scott and tender him the hospitalities of our city—and the committee to consist of six: Ald. Charles Maynard, Hatfield Smith, Gray and the President.
In relation to this matter the Albany Evening Journal says— A public reception is due the true General— He achievements have placed him foremost in the ranks of soldier lore. In every movement, from the moment he landed upon the walls of Vera Cruz, until he entered the city of the Aztecs, he exhibited the wisdom of the accomplished General and the bearing of the gallant soldier. And his countrymen appreciate his achievements They have reflected equal glory upon the nation, upon the army and upon himself. Nor is this glory dimmed by the outrageous conduct of the Administration towards him. His arrest at the wars end, when by the capture of the capital he had practically terminated the war has loathsome his trimes but it cannot tarnish his fame. His name will appear clear as the sun upon the page of history, while his persecutors will be forgotten, or only remembered to be despised.
