SINGULAR PRESERVATION.

Buffalo, (Niagara) Sept. 30.—On Friday the 19th inst. Salmon Sweetland, residing at Conneaut Creek, Ohio, embarked in a canoe, 14 feet long, and about 2 feet wide, in pursuit of a deer, which was driven into the lake; after pursuing the deer about two miles, and coming near him, he changed his course and took for the shore. The wind being very heavy, Mr. S. attempted in vain, to return to the shore, and was obliged, after exhausting himself, to let the canoe drift before the wind: the wind continued strong from the South all the day and part of the night; but before morning the wind changed to the S. West, and drove the canoe down the Lake, and about 7 o'clock, came in sight of Long Point, U. Canada: about 3 o'clock, the canoe struck the lower end of Long Point; Mr. S. had no coat on, when he went into the canoe, and had only a small paddle: the sea run high nearly the whole time he was on the water, and often dashed into the canoe, which he was obliged to bail out with his shoes: when he arrived on shore, being oppressed with cold, fatigue and hunger, he endeavored to roll his canoe over the Point, which was about half a mile wide where he landed, but coming foul of some marshes, and perceiving the rough state of the water, on the lower side of the Point, he abandoned his canoe, and proceeded up the bay, in hopes of finding some habitation, and food: the frequent marshes on this side of the Point, obliged him to desist;

and he crossed the Point, and travelled until the next day (Sunday) about mid-night, when he came to the house of John Fink, at Walsingham, where he was enabled to procure some refreshment, clothes, money, &c. Mr. S. not having breakfasted on Friday morning, he was, of course, 3 days & 3 1-2 nights without having tasted food. He came down the Lake and arrived at Buffalo on Sunday night last, in apparent health, and is now waiting a fair wind, to return home to his family.
