The Standard's Nut-Shell.
"Let it therefore be written down as a well settled fact, that the Democrats offered a plan of compromise, which would have organized both Houses at once, and that too as they now are; but that the Whigs rejected this plan, and held on in their efforts to obtain both the Speakers, until the Democrats voluntarily went forward and gave them the Speaker in the Commons, and then stood upon their rights until the Whigs were forced to yield them the Speaker of the Senate. This is the whole matter in a nut shell, and we defy Whig sophistry to explain it away."
