AN INNOCENT PUNISHED
Thirteen years ago in Florence County, S. C., a young colored man was accused of assaulting a white woman.
He was arrested, but, luckily, a mob was averted and his life spared.
He was given a legal hearing and upon recommendation of the jury, he was sentenced to serve thirty years in the penitentiary.
No doubt, the evidence submitted must have been flimsy to have caused such a jury to make a recommendation for mercy.
The unusual has since happened. The conscience of the white woman compelled her to admit after all these years, that she lied and that the colored man did not assault her. She gave an affidavit to this effect, and upon which the governor has pardoned the innocent man.
This is only one in no doubt hundreds of other cases in which the innocent met summary death by way of the mob.
