Hon. Robert J. Walker.
The history of this man, when he puts forth such high pretensions as is his wont those days, becomes interesting to the people of Mississippi. It should be remembered that it was ROBERT J. WALKER who made oath that he was a resident of Louisiana when he claimed to be a resident of Mississippi, and that it is Robert J. Walker who concentrates his property in Louisiana that it may not be reached by his debts in Mississippi. It should be remembered that R. J. Walker himself went in largely on the credit system and took his share of bank facilities brought about by the golden promises of Benton and Jackson. It should be remembered that Robert J. Walker is the man who declared, in the streets of Natchez, that "if God would forgive him for the support he had already given to Gen. Jackson, he would never again be found upholding his administration." It should be remembered that Robert J. Walker played the sycophant after making this notable declaration, and forced himself as a Simon Pure sycophant upon the Jackson members of the Mississippi Legislature, and was by niggardly baseness elected to the Senate of the United States. And the people of Mississippi should not forget that Robert J. Walker is capable of any act which will promote his own sinister designs, and that his vanity is commensurate with his total disregard of the lofty principles which should mark the character of a United States Senator from chivalrous and wealthy Mississippi.
