RICHMOND, October 25.

On the 20th instant arrived in Chesapeake bay a British fleet of 54 ships, 25 of which are large, the residue small. On the 2d they landed 1000 infantry and 100 horse at Newport news, who immediately proceeded to Hampton, of which they took possession. Part of them are gone into Elizabeth river, but whether they have effected any landing there not certainly known. It is supposed the whole land force is 1000 men, commanded by General Leslie, and the fleet is said to be commanded by Commodore Rodney, one of the Admirals of that name.

The people in the neighbourhood of the invasion, turn out with great alacrity and spirit, and trust they will be immediately supported by their upper brethren.
