TELLS OF SUCCESS OF SPOKANE MEN IN ELY.

W. M. Evans, a Spokane real estate and mine owner, has returned to that city from a trip to Ely.

"To show how things go there" said Mr. Evans in an interview in the Spokesman-Review, "the Guggenheims are erecting a smelter which will be able to handle 10,000 tons of ore a day at the start and can be increased to 20,000 tons a day. It will require two years to complete this smelter, however. Arrangements have been made to bring 700 iron workers from Pittsburg, Pa., to work on the smelter in the spring. At present 300 men are employed on the works.

"This concern owns the Nevada Consolidated group, which consists of possibly 100 mining claims. They are sinking a five compartment working shaft, which is one of the largest undertakings of the kind in the world. This shaft is going down on the Star Pointer, one of the claims of their group.

"In one place a shaft was sunk 700 feet and drifts run for a distance of 1400 feet. Three-fourths of a mile distant another shaft was sunk 700 feet, which was connected by a drift with the first one, and every part of the workings were in ore. The values are in copper which runs from 2 to 2 per cent.

"Everything is on the boom down there. Mines, town sites, railroads and everything else that goes to make up a new mining country. Because I had a black hat and a new overcoat I was taken for a capitalist. Finally I borrowed a white sombrero and after that did not receive so many offers to 'get in on the ground floor.'

"I met many oldtimers from this section down there. J. R. Marks, who at one time was of the Holly, Mason, Marks & Co. incorporation of Spokane, is now a capitalist. 'Dick' landed in Ely last fall with $80; his income is now $3,200 a month. He is in real estate and other lines of business.

'Robert Neill, who at one time was well known in the Coeur d'Alenes and in Spokane, has an income of $50 a day from a lodging house that represents an investment of $6,000.

"There were a great many more that I met while there whom I can not well remember at this time, but all are prosperous. New railways now building are bringing that country out in great shape.

I made a few real estate investments while there."
