Recommended By Government Agents Following Inspection
Restoration of the Old Braddock Trail in the mountains from Wills Creek at Cumberland, through Garrett county to the Youghiogheny River east of Uniontown, Pa., has been recommended by Government agents who have gone over part of the route.
In Uniontown as Federal investigators to determine the feasibility of the project. Harold F. Lee and Harry Thompson, of the State and National park services, respectively, were much impressed.
The plan calls for a trail 100 feet wide to be used only as a bridle path and for pedestrians. No motor traffic would be permitted. While the project calls for a reconstruction of the entire trail traversed by General Washington and his forces, the first section to be improved would be the part of the trail leading from Fort Necessity to Braddock's Park to Jumonville, and thence to the Youghiogheny River.
Beyond the river the remainder of the trail has been transformed into rich farm lands in Westmoreland and Allegheny counties in Pennsylvania.
During their visit to Fort Necessity, officials found a 15-ft. blue print, carefully compiled by John Lacock, historian, and showing all details of the old trail.
Restoration of the old trail will call for an appropriation of hundreds of thousands of dollars. It may become a major CCC project.
The trail from Wills Creek through Frostburg and thence through Garrett county is clearly marked and the route is known to many people who have hiked over it from time to time in recent years. Several years ago the road was marked with arrows.
