Fire.—The citizens of Hagerstown were alarmed with the cry of fire, last night at about eleven o'clock, which suddenly made its appearance in the stable of the Globe Tavern—the wind being high, it spread with great rapidity to the stables across the alley, and very soon laid them in ruins, notwithstanding the prompt and active exertions of the Fire and Hose Companies. The scene at one time was truly appalling, and apprehensions were entertained that the whole centre of the town, and the most valuable part of it, consisting of stores and shops would suffer from the devouring element. The entire range of buildings from the Globe to Mr. Artz's brick house were in danger, and the roofs of some of them had actually kindled. Six stables in all were consumed, viz: the one belonging to the Globe Tavern, Quantrill's, Herr's, Johnston's, Miller's, and Hammer's. The loss in hay and oats, in some of them, was considerable. Whether it was private vengeance, or the pure love of destruction, which led to this heavy conflagration, the wicked author of it must and ought, we think, to be satisfied at his success this time.
It was no doubt the same incendiary hand, that made the seven previous attempts, and two of them in the very stables consumed, during the winter. The damage suffered is very large—particularly to the proprietors of the Globe, and Capt. Quantrill.—Herald.
