The F. F. A. boys of Central Union high school are attempting to demonstrate that they believe in earning while learning. Those boys who are interested in poultry are getting started on very good poultry projects, and the F. F. A. organization has already purchased three incubators, each one of 540 egg capacity. Some boys are planning to go into egg production, some are planning to sell fryers, and others are planning to produce capons.
These incubators are being operated in the classroom by the various boys and are greatly increasing the interest of the boys in their poultry work.
Last week Lewis McElvaney and Fred Veliquete took home their day old chicks, the first batches to be hatched in the F. F. A. incubator.
Not to be out-done, the boys interested in hogs have purchased a purebred Duroc Jersey boar from Mr. Loveland of Brawley. This boar will be kept on one of the boys' farms close in to the school, for the service of the sows owned by the F. F. A. boys.
S. E. Allen and Guy L. Hatch, shop instructors in the high school, are cooperating with the agriculture department in making equipment which the boys wish to use in their agricultural projects. At the present time a large number of feed hoppers are being made in the wood shop, while other boys under the direction of Mr. Allen, are making electric brooders and overhauling and re-wiring the last two incubators purchased by the boys. This equipment is being purchased by the boys for their own use and paid for out of proceeds from the candy sale during the noon hour and after school, which is conducted by the F. F. A. boys.
Cleo Edgar started several months ago with a young gilt on his project and today is proudly telling the other boys of the thirteen little pigs which arrived yesterday to increase the size of his project.
House has recently had an addition of eight pigs to his project while Ralph Adams is looking forward to a similar event with his purebred registered Duroc gilt, which he showed at the recent Imperial Valley fair and on which he won a first prize of $5.
