“On the night of the 17th of April, P. Howell, having detected one of his negroes stealing meat, and finding that he was in the habit of selling it to a white man named R. McDaniel, made the boy make an appointment with the white man to deliver him more bacon, while Mr. H. and his friends surrounded the spot, and effected his capture. McDaniel was arrested and carried before Justice Deskins. While in the court-room he borrowed a penknife from a bystander, and before he could be stopped, cut his throat. The windpipe was severed, and his neck horribly gashed. He is still living, but in a most critical condition.”
