Fire Hazards Being Eliminated By City of Seward

A report on Seward from the Board of Fire Underwriters of the Pacific was received recently by Mayor Eugene N. Lanier.

The report, a result of a survey taken by representatives of the underwriters last summer, pulls no punches in pointing out the fire hazards in Seward, and makes several specific recommendations for improvement.

Some of the obvious faults already have been, or are in the process of being, remedied. These include the new fire hall (the old fire hall was still in use at the time of the survey), and more thorough and regular training of the firemen. Also, 1500 feet of new hose has been ordered and should be here any day now.

The report raps the antiquated building code of Seward and especially the lack of building inspections within the city.

Seward officials and the fire department are studying the report carefully.

Despite the obvious need for improvement, it is believed by the Seward Fire Department members that this is the best equipped town for its size in Alaska. If the recommendations by the underwriters are followed. Seward's 'fire proof' rating will go up, the fire insurance rates will go down, and our town will be a much safer place in which to live.
