Full Text

Letters from Rome bring a Confirmation of the Edict mentioned in our last against all manner of Card-Playing, and adds, that the Pope has most earnestly charged the Governor of Rome to be very careful and vigilant in preventing publick Breaches of this new Law ; for as to private Offences, they think it morally impossible to prevent them in such a City, where there is so great a Number of Nobility, whose Palaces are like so many privileged Houses. -- And yet, if Gaming be an Immorality destructive of the Welfare of Civil Society, the Great ought no more to be indulged in it than the Dregs of the People : Nay, it is rather more criminal in the former, as their Education and Fortune might easily furnish them with more rational Ways of spending their Time.
