Gloomy as the prospect is, no doubt but it is not desperate; even were it ever so hopeless and so desperate, there is one thing we should always keep in mind—risk every thing— ships, armies, blood and treasure; but risk not the British character. Amidst the wreck of every thing; amidst disaster and defeat; amidst storm and tempest, let us have this proud consolation, the British honor, faith, and integrity, remained unsullied and unimpeached.
We are anxious to see the terms of the capitulation of Madrid. We trust that the troops who were there have retired southward. Of the effect which this event will have upon the movements of our troops we are not yet informed The latest intelligence from sir John Moore being of the 5th, he could not of course have known that Madrid had capitulated. But as the information of the determination of the people of Madrid to defend it to the last extremity, determined him to suspend his retreat, this news of Bonaparte having taken Madrid will probably induce him to continue it.
