Portsmouth.

Tuesday, February 19, 1805.

Fellow Citizens of New Hampshire,

The principle of self defence is authorized by the founder of our religion, as it is likewise the dictate of nature. For a people tamely to yield to tyrants their civil and religious privileges, is an affront to the Deity and dishonorable to themselves.--The most High, who rules over all, and orders all events, has seen fit to distinguish our nation from all others by the first of blessings, Liberty and Religion--and when the oppressors of mankind were aiming to deprive us of our civil and religious liberties, the Almighty fought for us, freed us from a foreign yoke, and made us a great and independent nation, the envy and the admiration of all the nations of the earth ; and when our internal, in league with our foreign enemies, were endeavoring to deprive us of the blessing, the glory and honor we had by Divine inspiration acquired, our heavenly guardian again interposed in our behalf, and advanced Jefferson to the Chief Magistracy, and the worthiest of men to co-operate with him in the administration of our government.-I need not more mention how long this State has been under the disgraceful influence of the enemies of our Republican Government, and how greatly Republicanism has triumphed over their vile machinations. What I have in view is, to rouze my countrymen to every possible exertion, totally to eradicate every remaining vestige of aristocratical and monarchical influence from our government ; and this you will effect by being unanimous on the approaching second Tuesday of March next, in choosing such officers as have the sanction of our wisest and most experienced men. To be remiss or negligent in a matter of such moment, must render us shamefully criminal and unworthy of the exalted privileges and blessings bestowed upon us. Let us then my Countrymen, continue firm and undeviating in the sacred principles which have freed us from tyrants and formed our government. Let us be vigilant and immoveable in supporting our dear bought Independence ; the known and approved friends of which are the gentlemen recommended to your choice in the following
