Lewiston, Me., May 12.—The Second congressional Republican convention to nominate a candidate to succeed the late Congressman Nelson Dingley was held here Thursday. After preliminaries, C. E. Littlefield was unanimously nominated. He said in part: The action of the administration in declaring and prosecuting the war, the negotiation of the treaty of peace reaping its fruits met the approval beyond question of an overwhelming majority of our people. It is too late to discuss the wisdom of the acquisition of control over territory in the Orient. That responsibility has already been assumed. We must properly discharge it at our peril. It has been too much to expect that these great, untried questions can be settled without mistakes. The world moves, and we must move with it. If we err, I believe we should err looking forward and not backward.
