St. Louis, Oct. 23.—Harry Goldman proprietor of the Dr. Haux Spectacle company was found guilty in the federal court here on a charge of using the mails to defraud. The business of the firm aggregated $180,000 last year. It was charged that the firm inserted advertisements in newspapers offering to send the reader a $5 pair of spectacles if he could return a coupon, which was a part of the advertisement.
The prosecutor claimed the spectacles were not sent until a dollar was forwarded by the man who returned the coupon and that the lenses were such as no reputable oculist would sell. Goldman explained that he advertised to send the lenses free in return for a coupon and four names of persons who needed spectacles but that the one dollar covered the price of the spectacle frames.
