Full Text

Sheriff Nance and the Governor.

In former years no man shouted more for Tillman, and no man worked more zealously for his election than did Capt. F. W. R. Nance of this county. When he got into office Governor Tillman ordered him to levy on the railroad trains. Sheriff Nance straightway did the lawful thing under the orders of his chief.

The Governor afterward paid the fines of the other sheriffs who had done as Sheriff Nance did, but concluded to let his most enthusiastic friend in Abbeville paddle his own canoe. He let the fine of Sheriff Nance stand against him, and we believe the Governor intends to make an exception in this case.

The Governor thinks that he is justified in going back on his old friend, because he purged himself of contempt of court.

At best the office of Sheriff is not a desirable one, and when the Governor repudiates his old friend, and sends him stinging telegrams, the official plum that fell to Sheriff Nance is not of the most palatable kind.--Abbeville Press and Banner.

Event Details

In former years, Capt. F. W. R. Nance of Abbeville County was a strong supporter of Governor Tillman and worked zealously for his election. When in office, Governor Tillman ordered him to levy on the railroad trains, and Sheriff Nance complied. The Governor paid the fines of other sheriffs who did the same but let Sheriff Nance's fine stand. The Governor justified this by noting that Nance purged himself of contempt of court. The office of Sheriff is not desirable, especially with the Governor repudiating his old friend and sending stinging telegrams.
