This result is not to be attributed to any actual changes against us since 1838, but to the culpable remissness of our friends in some three or four towns and to local causes, which will not at all affect the Presidential election. In Portland, the democracy have done nobly, and have actually made a handsome gain since the last test election. Considering the immense odds they had to contend against here, our republican friends deserve great honor for their unshaken firmness. If similar steadfastness and vigilance had been evinced in other parts of the county, we should have elected our ticket by a large majority. In Baldwin, and Cumberland, and Pownal, and Poland, and Sebago, and Brunswick, we have also gained handsomely since 1838; but not enough to balance the killing losses in Westbrook, Gorham Freeport, Windham, and Raymond. A full turnout in these towns by our democratic friends would have saved the county.
That the democracy have, at this very moment, a decided majority in Cumberland District we have no manner of doubt Independent of the fact that our own legal voters were not out at the Polls, it must be remembered, that the opposition IMPORTED ILLEGAL VOTERS enough from Boston, and other places to make up their whole majority for member of Congress. At another time, we shall have much more to say upon this subject.
We assure our friends abroad that the democracy here are not disheartened by their unfortunate loss in the District! THEY WILL ARISE AGAIN and in November next, will redeem the County!
