[From the Northampton Gazette.]
We hope the democrats will nominate Butler, and that all the greenback, labor reform, working-men, national, and communistic elements will center upon him. We hope they will lift high the banner of reform in state affairs-that they will make a reduction of taxes by means of a reduction of expenditures and salaries, a special plank in their platform. It would do good. Whether it succeeded this year or not, its effect would be healthful. It would get people talking about these matters. It would give an impetus to the reform movement, which, sooner or later must end in success. The people want stirring up. The republican party wants stirring up. The office-holding element wants a vigorous choking. The body politic, like a much-used feather-bed, wants airing. And it will come, too. Somehow-we cannot tell just how,-it will come. It may come with an ill-directed force and power, as it did when the know nothing movement swept over the state. The elements are ripening for the harvest. Let Gen Butler run. We hope he will stump the state, and wave the reform banner from Cape Cod to North Adams. We hope the democrats will give him their support, to a man. The republican party would then be compelled to wake up and meet this combination on its own ground. It would be compelled to try the virtue of reform, also, or be defeated. In this way the interests of the people would be served. Our state-tax would soon disappear. Times would be better, because taxes would be lighter. Move on, reform procession-move on! We had much rather Gov Talbot should be elected by a majority of 50 votes than of 50,000.
