Two British Squadrons on our Coast.
It is now asserted that two British squadrons,
consisting of at least 6 frigates are on our coast.
They have come on the coast, for the purpose
of falling in with our squadron under the com-
mand of Commodore Rodgers when he put
to sea again.
The enemy's force consists of the following
frigates, viz.
Belvidera, Aeolus, and Maidstone frigates,
which, on Monday last in the afternoon, board-
ed the ship Ganges, from London, for this
port, off Long Branch, within two miles of
the shore, since which they have probably
stood to the eastward, and the following ships
have taken nearly the same station, a short
distance from Sandy-Hook, as we are inform-
ed by the passengers in the Packet, viz.
The frigates Acasta, Statira, and Nymph,
on Thursday, at noon, boarded the British
Packet, 20 miles to the eastward of the High-
lands, and the boarding officer stated, that they
hourly expected to fall in with Commodore
Rodgers, from Boston; they having heard of
his arrival at that port, and of the capture of
the Guerriere, by the Constitution.
The British Packet Nymph, Capt. Beresford,
arrived here yesterday from Falmouth, via
Halifax, with the July mail. She left Fal-
mouth the 7th of July, and Halifax on the
27th ult.
On the 10th of August, in lat. 43, 36. lon.
48, 32, spoke the British gun brig Blood
Hound, from the Chesapeake with a flag of
truce for England, with the British Consul
Mr. Shaw, on board. Last Tuesday, off Cape
May, spoke ship Lorenzo from the Isle of
May for New Bedford, with the loss of her
topmast. Yesterday at one o'clock, 20 miles
east of the Highlands, was boarded by the
British frigate Statira, in co. with the frigates
Acasta and Nymph.
The whole number of prizes sent into Ha-
lixax down to the 27th ult. was 43. We have
had an account of the whole, except the fol-
lowing.
