'TOLLAND, May 28, 1829.
On Monday of this week a County Temperance Society was formed in Tolland. Many from neighboring towns attended:—upwards of ninety men signed the constitution, and twenty-five women. Mr. Hewitt preached on the Sabbath, and again on Monday. Our retailers refuse to sell ardent spirits—and it makes a mighty noise among our rum-drinkers; and even some of our sober kind of men manifest a spirit of disapprobation and resentment. It was proposed that an auxiliary society should be formed in every town in the county. Some are very zealous for it; some are much opposed to it. They are hit on a darling point, and cannot bear to give it up. The signers form much the most respectable class. I think no man who values his reputation as much as he ought to or considers the influence of example, will be willing to be left behind.'
