The anniversary of this Society was held on Monday evening in the Rev'd Dr. Alexander's Church. Rev. Dr. Miller, of Princeton, presided, and made a short address. He feelingly alluded to great numbers of heathens who had perished since the last anniversary of the Board, and to the feebleness of the efforts put forth in their behalf, which, had they been at all commensurate with the greatness of the object, or such as might have been expected from this portion of the Church, would have resulted in the salvation of many who have now left the world. Many of the Church here had also died: it behooved those who remain to be more diligent and faithful.
The annual statement of the Board was then read by Walter Lowry, Esq., Corresponding Secretary. The receipts during the year were $82,672.84: Expenditures, $81,469.71. Balance in the Treasury, $1,203.13. There had been printed and circulated of the "Missionary Chronicle," 6,240 copies; of the "Foreign Missionary," 14,200 copies. Nine ordained Missionaries had been sent out, of whom one had been sent to Texas, two to the Indian tribes of our own country, one to Africa and five to China. There are now laboring, under the direction of the Board, 51 Missionaries and assistant Missionaries. These Missionaries occupy as fields of labor—1st, Texas, having four stations; 2d, the Indian tribes, three stations; 3d, Western Africa, four stations, with a boarding school containing 40 scholars, and 3 common schools containing 143 scholars; 4th, Northern India, three stations, at which there are 7 ministers, 1 physician, 1 printer, 4 printing presses printing annually 8,000,000 pages, 6 boarding schools with 179 scholars, 4 high schools with 301 scholars, and 12 common schools with 300 scholars; in China, three missions, attached to which are 7 ministers, 2 physicians, 1 printer, and a type foundry. The press was started in June last, and at the last accounts had printed 1,000,000 pages of the Scriptures. About the middle of the last year the Board commenced operations in Papal Europe, and had already sent $50,000 to that field of labor. Although the receipts appeared small, yet they would appear large when the good which had thereby been accomplished was considered.
Impressive addresses were then made by the Rev. Drs. Snodgrass and Alexander, setting forth the nature and importance of the work, the success which had already attended it and the encouragements which are wafted upon every breeze for greater efforts and renewed faith
The Benediction was pronounced by the President.
