Full Text

The New York Times says that the estimates for street-cleaning in that city during the current year fall but a few hundreds short of a million of dollars. Five hundred street-sweepers are supposed to be employed during the whole year, and to supplement their exertions an additional $100,000 is appropriated "to remove snow and ice."

For twelve or fifteen weeks in Winter and Spring the street-sweepers have no work. The actual existence of five hundred sweepers is regarded by the skeptical as exceedingly doubtful; but pay for their services at the rate of $5,000 per week is drawn from the city treasury with unimpeachable regularity.

Boss Tweed is securely immured within the walls of the prison at Blackwell's Island; but his spirit still survives in the Empire City; in fact, we are forced to the conclusion that there are worse men than Tweed out of jail.
