From the New-York Journal.
Written Extempore on the Act for the destruction of DOGS.
The act's come, the thund'ring bolt is hurl'd
Which deals destruction to the Canine world:
Vain party scribblers prostrate now may lie,
For if he barks, the rogue must surely die;
The man who's bit most loudly may complain,
While stones and dirt shall sanctify his reign,
See Modest****** ranging thro' the town,
Each honest man shall strive to knock him down:
To save their chief, each mongrel whelp's in pain,
From Canvastown up to the Bowery-Lane:
But vain attempts confirm their founded fears:
Their tails are couchant, touchant are their ears:
See puppies mounted, but to grace my lays,
T*** on horse back, R*** in chaise.
Then why should curs, whose venom far exceed
The frothy substance of the canine breed,
Yelp thro' our streets, nor our resentment feel,
While justice calls aloud for hemp and steel.
