Full Text

The mother of the baby elephant at Bridgeport is sick, and the only elephant doctor in the country has been summoned from New York to dose her. It requires a good deal of strategy as well as medical skill to doctor elephants. When an elephant is well it will take almost anything; but when unwell it is obstinate. The method employed to get oil down Hebe's throat was to suspend the bottle above her with a long rubber tube inserted in her mouth. She kept her teeth firmly closed upon the hose until the operation of breathing caused her to relax her grip, and then a little of the liquid would run down. This performance was repeated at nearly regular intervals until the whole bottle was emptied. The entire operation consumed about an hour and a half.
