Payton, a Negro, Says She was attacked
by Him at Her Home Near
Ladd, Ark.
For fear that the negroes of Melton
township, who are said to be displaying
bitter feeling against Arthur
Payton, a negro, charged with criminal
assault, might lynch him if he
was taken there for preliminary hearing,
Magistrate B. F. Hooker, of Ladd,
Ark., yesterday came to Pine Bluff
and held court at the office of Magistrate
J. A. Frazier. Payton was given
a preliminary hearing on the charge
and was bound over to await the
action of the Jefferson county grand
jury. He now occupies a cell in the
Jefferson county jail. Payton, who
was recently pardoned from the State
penitentiary, was prosecuted by his
mother-in-law, Laura Jones. She is
an aged negress and claims to have
been a victim of Payton's alleged attack.
The woman positively identified
Payton in the court room as the
negro who attacked her. The alleged
crime was committed at the Jones
woman's home, near Ladd. Payton
was recently arrested at Star City.
Lincoln county, and returned to Pine
Bluff by Deputy Sheriff John Bono.
