PLOT TO FIRE ST. LOUIS.—Many of our chief cities are apparently being visited by incendiaries. Only a few days ago the story of a persistent attempt to fire a Boston hotel was given, and now a despatch from St. Louis narrates the discovery of a wholesale plot to burn that city. For some time past whispers have been going around among the prisoners of the city police courts to the effect that a conflagration greater than that which laid low Chicago and Boston would shortly visit St. Louis. Recently the Chief of Police has received a communication containing a letter of the chief of the conflagrationists to a confederate. This letter bears undoubted marks of authenticity and genuineness, and avers that the 'boys are ready for business the first cold, windy night.' It goes on to say that there are thirteen "cribs" all right, and exhorts the person to whom it is addressed to keep cool and his "pile" will be made. The new Guy Fawkes signs himself "Charlie." On the strength of this fire-breathing document the police force is being doubled and every precaution taken to guard against the igneous contingency.
