Full Text

Richmond, June 3, 1804.

The following is from a New York federal paper. There is so much christianity,
Connecticut piety, and charity in it, that we should readily conclude the writer to
have been a pupil of the Pope.

"More 'useful labors.'--By a gentleman direct from Hartford we are informed that on
Friday of last week, a company of republican democrats, headed by the famous Demo.
Tilden, a member elect of the general assembly, assembled and commenced pulling down
the Meeting-House in Lebanon, (Conn.) and on Saturday they re-assembled and completed
their useful labors, by levelling it with the ground!--This is a fact and may be relied
on, and may, perhaps, justly be considered as the leading trait in the character of the
party."

We should think it hardly necessary to contradict this statement, except it was to put
the unsuspecting on their guard against falsehoods of the same kind that may be told
hereafter. We do not hesitate to declare, this information by a gentleman "direct from
Hartford," is, for the most part, a "direct" lie. That a Meeting-House in the town of
Lebanon was taken down, is true. That it was done in pursuance of a vote of the town in
which it stood, is likewise true. Federalists as well as republicans assisted in
demolishing it; party politics had no connection with the business.--That it was taken
down for the purpose of building a new one, is likewise true.--Part of the materials for
which are now collected.--No doubt many a pious federalist would be glad to see one or
two Meeting Houses destroyed by republicans, that they might say their predictions were
verified --that "should Jefferson be chosen President the houses for public worship would
be destroyed."
