The triumph at Cadiz will turn out a mere bagatelle.
Let us judge of it by the official dispatches of Gen. Graham himself. He boasts of the "glorious issue" of the Action. Where is it? Why was this sally tried? Avowedly to drive the French army off—and raise the siege of Cadiz. But the French are still before it. Here is one fact in point.—The Allied troops sallied out of town—and what did they do afterwards, but march in again?
"They marched up the Hill and then down again"—And yet the besiegers had neither vanished nor retired. So far from it, that the British Admiral, who had in the mean time landed at St. Mary's; remained there several hours; and drawn the inhabitants in "thousands" around him; was himself under the necessity of retreating—though "it was so very distressing to leave the poor people behind him."
But we have two other accounts directly from Cadiz which have been published in our Federal prints, & of the very same date with the last of Graham's despatches; what do they say? That the British were very sore pressed, and "the Spaniards did nothing—that they gave no assistance—and Gen. La Pena would not allow his men to go on"—According to one of these accounts, indeed, he had been "dismissed the service."—The Despatches are however mum on that subject.
