In the House of Representatives Mr. Cambreleng, from the committee of Commerce, reported a bill to regulate the foreign and coasting trade of the northern and northwestern frontiers of the United States. He also reported from the same committee, with amendments, the bill from the Senate to repeal the tonnage duties. Mr. Powers, from the committee for the District of Columbia, reported a bill providing for the appointment of commissioners to digest, prepare and report to Congress at the next session, a code of civil and criminal law for the District of Columbia. Mr. Mitchell, from the select committee to whom the subject was referred, reported a resolution to provide for the removal of the remains of General Washington and of Mrs Washington from Mount Vernon, with suitable funeral honours and for depositing them in a tomb to be prepared under the centre dome of the capitol; and also for obtaining a pedestrian statue of Washington, to be executed by some distinguished artist, to be placed over the tomb, in the centre of the rotunda of the capitol. The engrossed bill declaratory of the several acts providing pensions for revolutionary soldiers, was read a third time, and after a long debate, which was continued until 4 o'clock, on a motion to recommit the bill with instructions to include a provision for the militia. the motion was negatived by a large majority, and the bill passed, vote of 112 to 58.
The Senate did not sit on Saturday.
In the House of Representatives there was much time consumed in a call of the House, there being no quorum at the usual hour of meeting. The House then considered the resolution offered by Mr. Swift, on the subject of fortifications on one of the Islands in Lake Champlain, but the hour expired before any decision was made. The residue of the day was occupied in the consideration of private bills.
