In Favor of the People. - It is getting to be fashionable at Washington City, all at once, to decide questions in which the people are opposed by the railroad companies in favor of the people, and the movement has only to go a little farther to suit the most radical. On the 24th instant, in the case of Jasper Priest vs the Northern Pacific Railroad, involving a tract in Vancouver district, Washington Territory, the Secretary of the Interior has decided in favor of plaintiff. This is one of a great number of similar cases that have been held in abeyance in the department. The Secretary now holds that where homestead entry existed at the time of withdrawal, within the indemnity limits, and the homestead entry was canceled, the tract did not fall within the protection of withdrawal, but was subject to entry of the first legal applicant. It has been a long time since so righteous a decision came from the Interior Department.
